ROOF WINDOWS VERSUS DORMER
When planning to develop the loft there are two options to get light in: building a dormer (until recently a very popular solution) or installing (becoming more and more popular ) modern roof windows.
Dormer
A dormer is a built-in wooden or brick structure. To build a dormer you will need to buy particular materials and carry out extra build on the roof. The choice of the dormers when renovating or rebuilding the loft generally requires the assistance of the builder. When drawing the project all the various changes in the construction of the house have to be taken in a
ccount e.g. the weight of maco terials used, changes in the roof construcmb ina tion in respect to rafter spacing or additional tion trimmer beams being installed. There is also a need to submit the dormer project to the proper building authorities in order to obtain all the required planning permissions.

When the construction of the dormer’s walls are ready, they also have to be externally and internally insulated. The construction must be watertight, so there is an amount of finishing work to be done around the dormer as well. Of course all the above mentioned works should be done by professional craftsmen equipped with specialist tools. An alternative way to light up the loft is to use prefabricated dormers where the metal structure is totally glazed and lets in sunlight from all sides.

Roof Window
A roof window installation does not require any serious construction changes to the roof (only the cutt
ing of battens). The width of the window usually matches the space between the rafters and makes the installation quite simple. The window installation does not require the building of additional walls or buying additional building materials which will increase the construction weight and the cost. There are special flashings offered, which are essential for the tight connection of the window to the roof with all kinds of roofing materials. In the package, there are window fitting instructions which enable you to install the window with the use of simple tools. Placing the window in the roof surface increases the angle of light entering the room and consequently enhances the level of illumination. Tests have proved that up to 50% more light enters the room than through a vertical window of the same size. To summarise, a roof window is a much more advantageous solution in comparison with the dormer because of: — smaller consumption of materials, is much lighter and cheaper; around 60-
70%; — the roof window installation is fast (takes 2- 4 hours) and simple and does not require the use of complicated tools — enhances room illumination by up to 50%; — decreases heat loss of the building in comparison with the dormer’s external construction walls. It is much easier to secure water tightness when applying standard flashings with the roof window than when preparing and installing hand made and complicated dormer flashings. The roof window illuminates the room and should be situated in the best possible place according to the user’s requirements. The roof window can be installed in places where the dormer installation, because of its construction, is not possible. The roof window can also be installed in various combinations gaining optimal illumination of the room, whereas in the case of a dormer this effect is dissipated.

Fakro roof windows are equipped with universal brackets, which allow installation either on trimmers or on rafters. Installation of the window at a chosen depth means that the milled groove marked with N, V, J letters is level with the top surface of the battens. The denotation of the depth of installation N, V, J corresponds to the last letter of denotation on the package of the flashing e.g. — EZV- flashing (E) type (Z) for tiled coverings with profile depth up to 45mm is assigned to the window installed on the depth V — EHN-flashing (E) type (N) for tiled coverings with profile depth of over 45mm is assigned to the window installed on the depth N

The new Fakro installation system applied to skylights substitutes installation brackets for screws. The screws are screwed directly to the rafters through the pre-drilled installation holes in the skylight frame. Using this innovative installation system allows easy and fast skylight fitting and reduces the possibility of mistakes.

Installation on rafters
We install windows on rafters when the window width matches the spacing between rafters, it ensures stability of the construction and th
e durability of the connection. Installation on rafters is recommended especially when we replace old windows (in already existing roofs) with new ones or when we install big windows. When the window’s width is bigger than the spacing between rafters we use trimmers in roof construction. Horizontal trimmer beams should be situated around 30-50 cm below the bottom and top edge of the window. It will allow proper lining construction of the window (bottom lining should be vertical to the floor and the head lining should be horizontal to the floor).

Choosing The Roof Window And Its Positioning In The Roof
The choice of roof windows depends on: — the glazed area and the type of the room The correct amount of natural light in the room is decided by the proportion of the surface of the window’s glass area to the total floor area. In the case of habitable rooms this proportion should be at least 1:8, and in other rooms where natural light is n
eeded because of their function –at least 1:12. — the pitch of the roof The positioning of the chosen window also depends on the roof pitch. The lower the pitch the higher up the roof the window should be.

Window installation height
In buildings where storeys are below 25m above ground level, the distance from the bottom edge of the opening window to the floor should be at least 0.85m. In buildings where storeys are more than 25m above ground level the aforementioned distance should be not less than 1.1m. It should be noted that the higher the window is fitted, the more light enters the room, therefore Fakro roof windows are equipped with a bottom handle opening system to facilitate the opening of the windows installed at optimum height.
The bottom edge of the Fakro roof window should ideally be situated 1.1-1.4m above the floor level. The recommended distance is 1.2m (bearing in mind that average room height is 2.5m), which provides a lot of light into t
he room and simultaneously offers an unrestricted view.

When deciding how and where to place roof windows we should consider a very important rule which says that much better effects are achieved if we use a number of smaller windows placed in different parts of the roof rather than only one larger one.

Choosing the correct flashing
The installation system and a wide range of flashings, which fit to various types of roofing materials, will ensure the correct choice of flashing and the correct installation depth of the window in the roof construction. Deeper roof window installation into the roofing material allows for better insulation around the window frame and may improve the aesthetics especially when using flat roofing materials. Depending on the type of roofing material, roof structure and architectural requirements Fakro roof windows can be installed at three different depths: — N (+3 cm) – window installed 3 cm abo

The high quality materials and state of the art production techniques ensure excellent quality control and give a durable, safe and funct
ional roof window that, together with its insulation properties, is breaking new ground in roof window design and construction. Using specially selected high quality pinewood and using the latest technology in timber lamination techniques Fakro roof windows are extremely stable. To complement this technology all timber components are vacuum preservative treated and given a three coat matt lacquer finish, which requires no further decoration. Externally the timber components are covered with aluminium cladding sections which are covered with a UV and weather resistant coating. Using the latest in glazing technology Fakro roof windows offer excellent energy saving characteristics. All windows are double glazed as standard and by using a single chambered construction with energy saving panes, each glazed unit achieves a U value of 1.0 W/m2K (1.4 W/m2K per window). This specification is achieved by covering the pane with a silver-oxide coating which reflects the sun’s rays. This make

AIR INLET CONSTRUCTION
Air inlet V40P
A new, automatic V40P air inlet is a modified version of the V35 air inlet, in which the air flow duct has been slightly enlarged and structure altered so that it automatically closes when the pressure difference increases or gusts of wind occur. Up to the pressure difference of 10 Pa, the V40 air inlet provides an increased air inflow and above, it acts a
s an automatic one ensuring proper microclimate in the room. The V40P air inlet is equipped with a continuous adjustment facility with an option of complete air inlet closing. The roof window fitted with this air inlet achieved favourable results in tests performed by independent research institutes, amongst others the CSTB in France. Automatic V40P air inlet used in Fakro windows is of unique design: — the air inlet channel is made in such a way that hot air avoids cold elements of the aluminium, as a result there is no presence of
water vapour condensation. Such situations may occur when the normal gravitational ventilation is not working properly and airinlet works as air outlet; — the air inlet construction provides proper thermal and acoustics features; — the air inlet has good filtration characteristics which means that dust cannot get into the room.

Automatic V40P air inlet
Positioned in the top part of the frame. The capacity of the V40P air inlet
is between 20 to 48 m² and rises up according to the pressure difference growth inside and outside the room, up to the point where the optimum value is achieved. If the pressure difference continues to grow, the airflow capacity stays on the same stable level. The elastic, pneumatic flap deflects, limiting the amount of inflowing air by reducing the air inlet duct area. Such situations occur in the winter time or when strong gusts of wind appear. Used in the following windows: — FTP-V, FTP-W, FPP preSelect, FPP-W preSelect
Hygroscopically controlled air inlet
The top part of window frame’s design equipped with automatic V40P air inlet was changed. It enables to fit additionally the hygroscopically controlled air inlet. In this type of air inlet, the amount of inflowing air depends upon the water vapour content in the air (relative humidity) inside the room. If the level of humidity continues to grow the hygroscopically controlled air inlet increases the amount of inflowi

Air inlet V-35
Positioned on the top part of the window frame, the V-35 has a manual adjustable air flow regulator. When fully opened this inlet supplies fresh air at between 16 to 37/h at a pressure difference of 10Pa, depending upon the width of the window. As a result of this great efficiency, air humidity inside the room is effectively reduced, thereby reducing condensation. The V-35 air inlet can, in part, discharge air when normal gravitational ventilation isn’t working properly. Its excellent venting efficiency guarantees that a greater amount of stale and humid air is removed from the room. Used in the following windows: — PTP-V — PPP preSelect
Air inlet V-10
Positioned on the top part of the window frame, the V-10 has a manual adjustable air flow regulator. When fully opened this inlet supplies fresh air at 10m3/h at a pressure difference of 10Pa. T

Pivot windows are the basic type of roof window. They ensure a flow of fresh air and allow light into the room. These windows open only in a centre pivot method and can be rotated through 180 degrees and this function is used when cleaning the outer pane or operating the awning blind. Centre pivot windows can be equipped with both external and internal accessories.
Top hung and pivot windows allow light and fresh air into the
room, ensure unobstructed access to the window and a wide view to the outside through the open window. They can be opened in two ways: — the outward opening function from 0 to 35 degrees enables an easy approach to the window and a wide view — the centre pivot function is used for cleaning and also operating the awning blind — Top hung windows can be equipped with external and internal accessories
The Panoramic and top hung windows, which are characterised by big dimensions, also allow light and fresh air into the room. The window opens to a wide angle and allows for access to the roof or for use as an emergency escape window. These windows can be opened: — outward opening function-opens to 40 degrees, enabling easy approach to the window and offering an unrestricted view. — an additional outward opening function to 68 degrees. The large sizes of these windows and a big sash-opening angle enable you to go out on the roof and also meet all emergency escape regulations. —

These windows let light in the room at a lower level and also improve the field of view. Centre pivot opening function - the window opens to 180 degrees for cleaning the outside of the glass. L-shaped windows can be equipped with internal accessories.
The side hung window enables safe and easy access to the roof and also acts as an escape window. It increases light in the room and allows fresh air into the room. The escape window is available in two vers
ions, right opening (FWP-R) or left opening (FWP-L); the sash can be opened to 90 degrees. Side hung escape windows can be equipped with internal accessories the same as other roof windows.
Skylights are designed for installation high above floor level. Skylights give additional light to the room. Skylights SFV-E opens to 30 degrees and thus allows ventilation to the room. SFV-E is supplied with an electric operating system, which controls all functions. Skylight SFV-E is fitted with a mosquito screen as standard and includes a rain sensor. Skylights can be fitted with a dedicated range of internal accessories.

The centre-pivot windows are the most popular roof windows nowadays. Thanks to the comfort of use, easy maintenance and universality these windows have been chosen by lots of users all over the world. The centre pivot windows can be used in different places in the attic and are available in various types and with different technical parameters. In places such as kitchens and bathrooms with higher humidity , special centre pivot windows with a white polyurethane finish are available. For those buildings which are designed as energy efficient houses, super thermo-insulated windows are available and recommended. The top-hung roof window is a modern, functional construction with high technical specifications. Among the standard features the top-hung version allows easy access to the bottom edge of the window and provides a broad view
when the window is opened in the top –hung version. Combinations of roof windows can be another interesting solution. In that solution you may combine windows of different constructions. FT centre pivot windows are the most popular type of Fakro roof window sold. The well-designed centre pivot allows the sash to be opened in a range of positions, thus increasing the amount of fresh air which can be drawn into the room. The sash can also be rotated through 180 degrees and locked allowing easy and safe cleaning of the outer pane to be carried out. Such pivot windows are operated using a two opening points handle positioned at the bottom part of the frame. As the air inlet is positioned at the top of the frame, Fakro windows have up t
o 6 % greater surface area when compared with similar window sizes from other manufacturers. This therefore increases the amount of light entering into the room. Window FTS is equipped with V10 air-inlet, which enables air inflow even with the window closed. Also available in conservation style.

FTP-V is a very well equipped centre pivot window. The window wood is coated with three layers of acrylic lacquer, is equipped with
triple sealing system and automatic V40P air inlet securing optimal amount of fresh air into the room with the window completely closed. Additionally, the hygroscopically controlled air inlet may be installed with ease. As the air inlet is positioned at the top of the frame, Fakro windows have up to 6 % greater surface area when compared with similar window sizes from other manufacturers. This therefore increases the amount of light entering into the room. The hinge positioned in the middle of the window height enables the sash to be rotated and left open. Window FTP-W is a pivot window offering additional moisture resistance , coated with a white, easy to clean polyurethane varnish. Windows FTP-V Electro, FTP-W Electro

The new FTP-V Electro window is a pivot FTP-V window factory
equipped with devices enabling its opening and closing as well as accessories’ operating with the use of a remote control. The window has got ZRD rain sensor which automatically initiates the sash closing function when the first rain drops appear. All window functions are operated with the use of one remote control. The whole integrated window control mechanism (control unit and servo-motor) is contained under an attractive aluminium cover fitted in the frame’s lower part. The FTP-V Electro roof window is factory equipped with a 3-channel control unit with 24V DC power supply and ZC 24 servo-motor. The servo-motor with the reach of 24 cm makes it possible to open and close the sash. By turning the handle through 90 degrees results in disconnecting the servo-motor from the sash (function used in case of power failure, window installation or when the external pane requires washing). It is also fitted with contacts (24V DC) facilitating the installation of electrically operated int
ernal accessories ARF-E or AJP-E and external roller shutter ARZ-E. These accessories are adjusted to the control unit and operated with the same remote control. The Electro roof window installation procedure is very similar to the one applied in case of standard FAKRO roof windows installation. There is no need to fit any additional wiring system as the window power supply voltage is 230 V. All that is required is to connect the wire to the domestic power network or just simply insert plug into a socket. FTP-V Electro window is equipped with a new, automatic, pressure air inlet V40P, which enables fresh air inflow into the room at an optimum rate.

Windows PTP, PTP-V
The aluminium-plastic PTP and PTP-V roof windows are a pivot type windows made of white, multi-chamber PVC-U profiles strengthened from the inside with galvanized steel profiles. Such construction ensures a high stability of the whole product and prevents the profiles’ deformation
during usage. The window is ideal for installation in loft rooms with periodically elevated humidity levels e.g. bathrooms or kitchens. The window is durable, corrosion free, resistant to changeable weather conditions and its maintenance is reduced to an absolute minimum. The plastic used in the window production does not absorb any moisture and is resistant to acid or alcohol action.

The FTT Thermo is a specialist roof window whose innovative structure ensures outstanding energy saving properties. This roof window is characterised by an extremely advantageous overall heat transfer co-efficient of U-window = 0.94Wm2K, which enables its application in buildings where heat loss reduction is particularly required e.g. passive buildings.
