– Once the boards are in place, use GUTEX WDVS
Spreiz-/Thermoschraubdübel (thermally-decoupled
screw expansion fasteners) to secure them and GUTEX
Verschlusselemente (plugs) to eliminate thermal
bridging.

strong and reliable.

General Installation Guidelines
Installation of the fibreboards
– Minimum board thickness for exterior walls is 40 mm
– Minimum board thickness for reveals is 20 mm
– Minimum useable board size is 20 x 40 cm
– Joints with adjacent elements of the building must be
tightly sealed a
gainst driving rain and wind.
– Hollows or buckles in the exterior surface are to be
smoothed out via sanding or planing prior to applying
the render.
– Board joints of 2 mm or less are acceptable; joints of
2-5 mm are to be filled with a suitable material, such as
GUTEX Fugendicht (joint sealer). Fill joints greater than
5 mm with GUTEX Thermowall/-gf.
– If
installing

horizontally
changing substrates, it is necessary to use
expansion/movement joints. Details are available at
www.gutex.de
– The GUTEX render system is to be installed no later
than 4 weeks after the GUTEX Thermowall/-gf is installed. If this is not possible, cover the exposed wall
with a tarpaulin, making sure air can circulate under the
tarpaulin.
– Protect installed fibreboards from direct exposure to
moisture.
– If loose insulation fill is to be used (typically blown into
the building block cavities), filling must be completed
before the render is applied.
– GUTEX Thermosafe-hom
ogen is not a suitable substrate
for render!
– Always store the boards in a dry place. Only install the
boards if they are dry.
– Install GUTEX Sockelabschlußleiste (stop beads)
or comparable stops at the bottom of the GUTEX
Thermowall/-gf boards adjacent to the foundation. It is
necessary to cut off the last board's bottom groove.
– Provide space between the GUTEX Sockelabschlußleiste (stop beads) for expansion, movement, etc. GUTEX
Sockelabschlussleistenverbinder (stop bead connectors)
are ideal, pg. 14.
– GUTEX Thermowall/-gf is not intended for use below
the ground
– Install the boards, staggering them by a min. of 30 cm
between parallel joints.
– Avoid cross joints.
.
– Avoid joints at the corners of openings
Fastening
– Suitable fastening products: GUTEX Thermowall Holzschraube (wood screws), GUTEX WDVS
Thermoschraubdübel
(thermally-decoupled
screw
expansion fasteners) or wide-back, stainless steel staples
(back width 27 mm, min. 1.8-mm gauge wire).
â
€“ Fasten 20-mm thick side reveal insulation lining with
either 60-mm Ø plastic disc fasteners and stainless steel
screws or stainless steel wide-back staples.
– Use the recommended quantity of fasteners.
– Only fasteners installed in a solid substrate will hold
effectively.
– Screw the insulation fasteners into the board, so they are
flush with the board surface.
– Counter-sink the wide-back staple 3-5 mm into the
surface of the boards.
– Minimum penetration depth for the wide-back staples is
≥ 30 mm
– Minimum penetration depth of GUTEX Thermowall
Holzschraube (wood screws) is ≥ 25 mm
– Minimum penetration depth of the GUTEX WDVSThermoschraubdübel (thermally decoupled screw expansion

Improper Installation and Consequences
Bottom edges adjacent to
foundation
Bottom edge of fibreboard not
properly fitted with stop bead.
Severely damaged board edges.
Missing sealing strips. ïƒ Ingression
of moisture causes the boards to
swell, cracks to form in the render,
and produces mould and fungus.
Window sills
Overhang ≤ 30 mm; absence of
sealing strips ïƒ Moisture from
driving rain and wind, brown
discolouration of render, mould and
fungus and swelling of boards.
Transitions from masonry to
wood structure
Both render stop and expansion/
movement bead (settlement joint)
absent.ïƒ Buckling due to settling,
formation of cracks caused by
movement, ingression of moisture.
Staggering of the joints
Distance between parallel joints is
less than 30 cm; the joints' spaces
are too large.
ïƒ
Increased structural stress may
cause cracks in the render, moisture
ingress.
Corners
Board joints insufficiently tight ïƒ
seeping in of render into the joints,
thermal bridging, visibility of joints
through the render, increased
likelihood of mould, fungus and
cracking.
Joints with other structural elements
Foamed joints are too wide ïƒ
absence of driving rain protection,
moisture ingression possible, cracking
and visibility of fasteners and insulation
joints through the render.
Fasteners
If fasteners that are not suitable
for composite thermal insulation
systems are used ïƒ the fasteners
may act as thermal bridges, rust or
cause surface marking.
Vent, exhaust openings
Openings in the exterior walls that
are sealed with tape ïƒ do not
provide the render with a suitable
surface for adhesion. The render
may blister, flake and crack, leading
to moisture ingress. ïƒ Seal joints
with GUTEX Fugendicht (sealing
strip).
Base coat
Too thinly applied; min. thickness of
4-5 mm is req
uired.
ïƒ The base coat is unable to
accommodate stress; cracks, flaking,
buckling occur.

6. Paint

2. Base coat
4. Primer
The base coat can be applied wet on wet or in two steps
(base and reinforcement mesh). To attain a minimum thickness of 5 mm and keep the reinforcement lath in the outer
third of the base coat, we recommend applying the base
coat in two steps.
Regulates the ability of the substrate to absorb, and
prevents the quick hardening of the final render coat. It also
serves as a bonding surface and provides the base coat with
its first protection against the weather. When the primer is
applied on the base coat, it may be left for a period of time
(over winter) before you apply the final render coat.
3. Reinforcement
5.1 / 5.2 Final render
Is necessary to prevent cracks in the render. To
accommodate movement caused by thermal activity, etc., the
reinforcement mesh must be applied over the entire
surface and the segments must overlap each other.
Provides addit
ional protection against the elements while
lending surfaces a uniform appearance. GUTEX Mineralfarbe PV, a mineral paint offers exceptionally good protection
against mould and mildew.
Splash water protective coat
6.Paint
Provides additional protection against the elements while
lending surfaces a uniform appearance. GUTEX Mineralfarbe PV paint offers exceptionally good protection against
mould and mildew.
With the use of a supplemental splash water protective
coat, GUTEX Thermowall/-gf can be installed right down
to the ground.
