Save Money and Preserve the Environment with Insulation
In Germany, 70 % of all buildin
g stock could be considered
old. Most of it is not up to par with today‘s energy-efficiency
standards.
Approximately 80 % of the energy costs incurred by homeowners and building operators are attributable to heating. With
proper refurbishment measures, 66 % of these expenses can be
saved. Insulation of the building envelope produces the majority
of these savings.
With quality materials and know-how, an ideally functioning
thermal envelope can be installed that significantly reduces the
loss of expensive warmth produced by your heating system.
Enjoy the following benefits offered by GUTEX wood fibreboard insulation while having the assurance that you are
making a contribution to preserving our environment:
•
•
•
•
•
Drastic savings on heating fuel
Drastic reduction of carbon dioxide emissions
The reduced heating costs pay for the investment within a relatively short time
Increased house value means higher resale value and rental fees
Significant improvement in the qu
ality of living due to the warm interior surfaces of outer walls and
healthy interior climate created by GUTEX wood fibreboard insulation:
- Thanks to low thermal conductivity, excellent protection against heat loss in winter
- Excellent protection against the heat in summer due to high volumetric heat capacity
- Vapour permeability and humidity regulating function produce a healthy indoor climate
- Optimum acoustic insulation thanks to the boards' open-pored fibre construction and homogeneous
density
• When you use wood, you are actively practicing climate protection, because wood absorbs and stores
carbon dioxide that its source (trees) extracted from the atmosphere during growth.

Roof refurbishment
Retrofitting with thermal insulation especially makes sense
for living areas directly under roofs. Due to the large outdoor
surface area in comparison to the volume of the indoor space,
roo
fs have a 42 % average loss of heat. In addition to the benefits
in winter, GUTEX insulation boards provide superb thermal
insulation in summer and acoustic insulation, significantly enhancing the quality of living areas under roofs.

Wall refurbishment
An average of 35 % of a building envelope‘s heat loss occurs
through its walls. Additional insulation to the façade is an
especially effective means of minimising thermal bridging.
GUTEX provides insulation boards for vented facades,
approved composite insulation systems for mineral and wooden
substrates and sarking for the insulation of the interiors of
exterior walls, which is particularly suited for listed buildings.
Ceiling refurbishment of the cellar and top storey
To optimise the thermal performance of your building or home,
it is important to insulate the ceilings below unheated attics
and the ceilings of unheated basements. In most cases, these
ceilings can be easily and inexpensively retr
ofit with insulation!

E n e r g y R e f u r b i s hment - A Project Example
Here is an actual project that demonstrates the enormous
potential for cost savings and reduction in carbon dioxide
emissions. Built in the 1970s, this poorly insulated house
underwent a major overhaul that brought it up to today's low
energy standards.
Before Refurbishment
Below is a list of the different building structures and
the GUTEX boards used for their refurbishment:
Roof
• 200 mm GUTEX Thermosafe-homogen installed over
existing sheathing
• 22 mm GUTEX Multiplex-top as sarking
Walls
• 100 mm tongue and groove GUTEX Thermowall installed
over the timber frame and finished with render
• 140 mm GUTEX Thermoflex between the studs
After Refurbishment
Floor insulation
• 80 mm GUTEX Thermowall installed over the undersides
of projecting joists and finished with render
• 160 mm GUTEX Thermoflex installed between the joists
Cellar ceiling
• 100 mm GUTEX Thermoroom installed over the
cellar's
concrete ceiling and finished with render

The refurbishment saves 3,900 litres of heating fuel annually.
Thanks to these savings, the investment will be paid back within
15 years.* The GUTEX insulation boards contain 9.6 metric
tonnes of permanently assimilated carbon dioxide, taken from
the
atmosphere whilst the trees from which they were made
were growing.
* Heating fuel cost of 8 euro cents/litre, including an annual price increase of 6 %

Protection against dampness
It is very important that home improvement plans incorporate
suitable design considerations to prevent condensation and
dampness, which are causes of mildew. The refurbished structures should be diffusion open.
GUTEX wood fibreboard-based structure designs have been
tested and approved for their suitability and effectiveness,
offering developers an
d architects reliable performance.
➞ With a µ-factor of 3, GUTEX woodfibre insulation boards
are twice as diffusion-open as insulation boards
manufactured using conventional wet processes, and they
have an exceptional ability to remain dry.
First steps
1. The first step is to inspect and assess the affected
structures and then chose the most suitable structural
design.
2. Next, the requirements of the developer and applicable
standards and codes must be considered and incorporated
into the plans, including:
a. Thermal insulation
b. Air tightness
c. Moisture protection
d. Wood preservation
In addition, it may be necessary to include further requirements for insulation against the heat in summer, fire protection or acoustic insulation.
➞ GUTEX wood fibreboard insulation is capable of
absorbing and storing up to 20 % of its weight in moisture
without affecting its insulation effectiveness.
Finally, select the most appropriate design from the examples
provided on the f
ollowing pages.
➞ GUTEX wood fibreboard insulation releases its absorbed
moisture into the atmosphere.
Important considerations
Air tightness
Building envelope tightness is essential to the health of the
building, its users and occupants. If the envelope is not
tight, warm air from inside the building will have access to the
structure, causing heat loss and condensation, the latter
producing mildew.
During summer, poor insulation causes the building's interior
to quickly heat up as the day progresses due to the influx of hot
air from outside the building.
- The further away the dew point in the building element
is from the building's interior, the safer the structure is
against mildew and other moisture-related damage.
- The structure is to be checked for air tightness. If it is not
suitably tight, an air barrier must be installed.
- Compliance to the manufacturer's
installation instructions is necessary.
